Russia — On the eve of the fire season, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin encouraged all agencies to take the situation in the regions where the last year’s disaster can repeat itself under their increased control, and to minimize the possibility of its recurrence. The MPs should expedite the enactment of the voluntary fire brigade legislation, demanded the Prime Minister while making his report on the Cabinet activities before the State Duma.

According to him, the situation in Siberia and the Far East is being now constantly monitored. For example, in the Far East, farmers and residents burn last year’s dry grass, which can lead to fires. “We should be extremely careful”, said Putin, adding that by 2015, under the retrofitting program of EMERCOM Russia, new fire transport will be purchased, particularly fire engines and aircraft, along with modern communications systems worth over 43 billion rubles.

In 2011, the Federation subjects will receive 5 billion rubles to purchase the necessary equipment and fire fighting engineering, and over 3.5 billion rubles will be allocated from the budget for restoration of forests, clearing of the burned areas, irrigation of peat bogs. “We must do everything in time and have to start right now”, said the head of the Government.
