United Kingdom / Cayman Islands — The bushfire continues to burn in the Seven Mile Beach area, across from Calico Jacks.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze for since Monday night, but they say they’re more than capable of handling it. Cayman Islands Fire Services Training Officer, Duane Tibbetts, told Cayman 27 the time it’s taking to put it the fire isn’t a reflection of the department’s ability.

“We can handle it. We’ve battled bigger blazes,” he said

Mr. Tibbetts also said they had the fire under control for a while and it’s not unusual for fires to flair up again several times.

Valentino Salvi is general manager of Tiki Beach, located just down the road. He says the smoke took its toll on everyone.

Thick smoke covered the area and Mr. Salvi says it’s not good for business.

Fire Services officials expect the fire to be completely out by Wednesday night. Until then, they’ll remain on the scene.

Firefighters at the scene say they still don’t know the cause of the fire yet.
