USA — A wildfire near Iowa Park Friday destroyed a dozen homes and the dollar amount on damage will likely amount to at least $2 million, according to preliminary estimates by Wichita County authorities.
The wind-whipped blaze — one of several in the region — scorched about 20,000 acres. In addition to destroying homes, the fire also claimed livestock, vehicles and equipment. More than 100 families were evacuated from their homes. Residents were slowly allowed back into their homes Saturday morning.
Wichita County Sheriff’s deputies and other county authorities were on the scene early Saturday trying to assess the damage and help people.
Wichita County Judge Woody Gossom said the total number of homes destroyed in the county may be between 40 and 70.
