Russia — Three peat bogs are smoldering in the Moscow region, head of the territorial policy department of the Emergency Situations Ministry Col. Gen. Yuri Kovalev said on Friday.

“A Mil Mi-8 helicopter equipped with thermal imagers made an aerial reconnaissance. Three peat bogs are burning under the ground,” he said.

A plan has been drafted for confining the fires, the ministry representative said.

He said that the irrigation of peat bogs would begin soon, and the region would start preparing for the fire-prone season with due account of last year’s situation.
