USA — A wildfire that burned more than 9,500 acres in Onslow County over the past week was contained Tuesday evening, military officials announced.
Camp Lejeune officers said that a overflight by an infrared recconnaisance plan revealed few hot spots, prompting officials to declare the fire 100 contained.
State forestry officials will completely hand over operations to Lejeune firefighters, who will monitor the remaining hot spots. They expected predicted rain to help put those out.
Military officers said that a ground fire continued to smolder in about 60 acres off Bridge Road and along South Pocosin Road.
Ground fires are caused by burning organic soils, such as peat. Some peat fires in coastal North Carolina have smoldered for months.
The fire began March 19 at an artillery range on the Camp Lejeune Marine base.
