South Africa — One of the firefighters who helped extinguish a large veld fire near Kleinmond in the Western Cape has died.

Roderick October passed away at Tygerberg Hospital on Monday night.

He was one of four people admitted to the facility after sustaining serious burn wounds.

Local government spokesperson Peter Pullen said, “We’ve been monitoring their progress. The minister has been kept up to date almost on daily basis and we were informed this morning by our Cape Nature that one gentleman had passed away last night. He passed away from his burn wounds.”

Meanwhile, three of the Grabouw contractor’s colleagues are still recovering in Tygerberg Hospital.

Hospital spokesperson Laticia Pienaar said, “The male patients are all in a stable, satisfactory condition. They have suffered some minor burn wounds.”
