Philippines — The Baguio Water District (BWD) is employing more guards to prevent forest fires in watersheds.
Engr. Salvador Royeca, BWD assistant general manager, said forest fires are rampant during summer because of the hot weather and the watersheds are vulnerable to fire.
The guards are also tasked to patrol against potential squatters, said Royeca.
Meanwhile, Baguio Regreening Movement chairman, Councilor Erdolfo Balajadia said a composite team of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Philippine National Police is helping in protecting the watersheds.
Water is scarce during the summer season and forest fires make it worse for our watershed to produce water. Everyone has the responsibility protect our source of water, Balajadia said.
