Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) in Abra joins the entire nation in observing the Fire Prevention Consciousness Month.
With the theme Kahandahan sa Sunog Tungo sa Kaunlaran the BFP in Bangued had embarked on an intensified campaign on fire prevention in schools, and through print and broadcast media.
In an interview over the local radio here, F/Insp. Juanito B. Manzano of the BFP Bangued enjoined all citizens to be more conscious of their actions particularly in taking extra care and caution to prevent fire because of the great damage it can cause to life and property.
Manzano expounded on some tips on fire prevention such as warning the parents and guardians not to allow their children to play with fire.
He likewise reminded every household to check their electrical wiring connections and advised everyone to avoid octopus connections because this may cause overloading of power supply and consequently fire.
The fire officer also reminded owners of buildings to make sure they have fire exits and that these fire exits should be always ready for use by the occupants in case of emergency.
The use of fire extinguishers is likewise encouraged in all households.
The forest-dwellers are also a target of the IEC on fire prevention because most of the forest fires especially during this harvesting season of honey and ants eggs are caused by irresponsible collectors of such. They use fire to get to the honey and to the eggs.
Manzano reminded these collectors to always make sure that they put off the fire in order to prevent forest fires because once the forest fires start, it is difficult to control the fires because of the distance and the absence of roads in the mountains; fire trucks could not reach the far flung areas.
Calamities are not only caused by natural phenomena but most of the time, because of our own negligence, irresponsibility, and indifference of our environment, Manzano pointed out.
