‘No man’s land’ fire bill passes Washington House

USA — The “no man’s land” wildfire bill passed the Washington House Monday and went to the Senate.
The bill sponsored by Rep. Bruce Chandler of Granger would require that potential buyers of property outside a fire district be notified of the “no man’s land” status. Owners could choose to receive fire suppression services. And, the legislation would provide some immunity to firefighters outside their jurisdiction.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the bill is a response to the 2009 Dry Creek Complex wildfire that burned 49,000 acres of sage-covered hills north of Sunnyside. It grew from smaller fires that were initially allowed to grow because they were in “no man’s land.”
