USA — County and city firefighters battled an intense brush fire for two hours Sunday, keeping it from damaging nearby homes, said Lt. Benjamin Bobzien of New Hanover County Fire Services.
Bobzien said firefighters went to Honeydew Lane about 2 p.m. for a brush fire, but winds pushed the fire toward Trumpet Vine Court off Split Rail Drive. Two engines from New Hanover County and two from the Wilmington Fire Department battled the fire, which threatened a neighborhood between Carolina Beach Road and South College Road north of Monkey Junction.
The firefighters kept the blaze from damaging homes, which were about 25 to 50 feet from the fire. The Division of Forest Resources also plowed lines to prevent ground fire from spreading.
“The homes narrowly escaped damage,” Bobzien said.
A few firefighters had minor injuries, and investigators are determining the cause.
