South Africa — A fatal fire in northeastern Ouachita Parish Tuesday afternoon is under investigation by Ouachita Parish firefighters.

Investigator Curt Meachum said the fire was reported about 2 p.m. Tuesday in Monroe. He said it was first reported as a grass fire at 106 Margaret Drive.

“While a truck was en route, the district chief on the scene requested an additional truck and reported heavy black smoke,” Meachum said.

Meachum said crews first reported to the scene around 2:11 p.m. and found an apartment on fire above a garage at 407 Connie Lynn Drive.

“Our crews said it was completely on fire,” Meachum said.

After tackling the blaze, Meachum said crews found a deceased person inside. He said the victim’s identity is known but cannot be released until the family is notified.

Meachum said investigators suspect the grass fire may have contributed to the blaze over the garage and do not suspect foul play. He said the residence did not have functioning smoke detectors inside.

Three engines reported to the fire. Meachum said firefighters were able to have the fire under control in about an hour.
