Australia — Bushfires in the South East coastal region over the weekend have killed a number of critically endangered parrots.
Fire authorities say more than 20 of the western ground parrots were killed when an enclosure they were in was burnt by bushfires in the Cape Arid National Park near Esperance.
Only 140 of the parrots remain in Western Australia. Department of Environment and Conservation Esperance Manager Klaus Tiedermann says there was nothing firefighters could do to prevent it.
“We had to pull the firefighters out, because of their safety, so we’ve lost one of the cells, but what we did manage to do by re-opening the old Poison Creek Road was protect the other cells,” he said.
