USA — Texas governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration due to extreme drought conditions that pose significant brush fire threats across the state. The declaration lists 244 of the state’s 254 counties as fire hazard areas.
Harris County fire marshal Mike Montgomery says the county is prepared for a worst case scenario. Montgomery says the last time such a state wide alert was issued was in 2005.
He adds that counties further north and west of Harris county are higher risk areas.
Montgomery hopes Texans celebrating New Year’s Eve with fireworks use extreme caution and common sense.
