Jamaica — THE Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) are urging the Jamaican public to refrain from burning garbage and allowing open flames due to the strong winds associated with the current cold front affecting the island.
In a statement today, ODPEM advised members of the public to take the following precautions:
- During the windy period be on the alert to prevent bush and domestic fires, by ensuring that all potential open burning be discouraged.
- Avoid using all naked flames while in dry grassy areas.
- Ensure that burning of cleared land is discouraged to prevent potential wild/bush fire.
- Smokers, ensure that cigarette butts, matches and other materials are extinguished before disposal.
ODPEM further advised that sparks will fly with the wind and that big fires start small.
