USA —  A grass fire lit up the night and burned a shed before firefighters could get it under control in an unincorporated part of Adams County.

The chief of North Washington Fire says the fire burned an open space near 78th and Washington and that high winds blew flames toward homes. About a dozen homes in the area were briefly evacuated.

“We primarily evacuated around the east and north side of this fire,” Mark Schuman with North Washington Fire said. “Mainly because the fire was moving rapidly and we had fences on fire. We didn’t want anyone in their homes should the structures become involved.”

Investigators say they are looking into reports that the fire was caused by a flare.

There is no further information available at this time.
