Man dies tending Waupaca brush fire

USA — An 84-year-old man died of injuries he suffered while tending a brush fire.

Waupaca Police Chief Tim Goke said Franklin O. Ferg was pronounced dead after police were called to 2033 Ferg Lane just before 6 p.m. Friday.

Officers determined Ferg had tended a controlled burn on the land Thursday, then returned Friday afternoon to tend the fire remains.

He was removing scrap metal from the smoldering pile when his clothing caught on fire.

He died of the burns.
