Jordan —  A fire erupted on Tuesday in Wasfi Tal Forest near Jerash, spreading over 70 dunums of land but causing no injuries, the Civil Defence Department (CDD) said.

The fire, which broke out at around 11:00am, was “superficial” and “did not affect the roots of the trees”, CDD Spokesperson Major Bassem Khalaf told The Jordan Times over the phone yesterday.

He added that around 300 firefighters from the department, along with 150 workers from the agriculture ministry, took part in extinguishing the blaze and succeeded in preventing it from reaching nearby areas.

“The fire was put out in record time,” he noted, adding that no injuries were reported.

Khalaf said the cause of the fire is unknown, but ruled out the possibility that it was caused by high temperatures.

A committee was formed to investigate the cause of the fire, the spokesperson said.
