New Zealand —  Several houses near Queenstown have been evacuated after the area was hit by a bush fire this morning.

Two helicopters were being used to battle the blaze, which began about 6am and was burning over a 500 square metre area about 5km from Queenstown on the way to Glenorchy, southern fire communications shift manager Karl Patterson told NZPA.

Four or five houses in the area had been evacuated, Mr Patterson said.
