South Africa —  More than 80 000 hectares of grazing veld had been destroyed by run-away fires in the Thabazimbi area of Limpopo late this afternoon. The devastating fire was allegedly started by welding sparks on a farm in Vaalwater on Thursday.

A blackened landscape could be seen for kilometers with thick clouds of smoke covering the clear blue sky.

Fire fighters from the Working on Fire Programme, Thabazimbi and Modimolle fire departments, farmers as well as members of the community were risking their lives to bring the blaze under control. Working on Fire’s Incident Manager, Kobus Visser says that the damage so far is unimaginable.

Meanwhile, two houses have been damaged by a freak storm at Seshego outside Polokwane this afternoon. The roof of one of the houses was blown off. Both had flat corrugated iron roofs. No one was injured.
