USA — Bambi has joined forces this week with Smokey Bear to encourage elementary-school-age kids to help prevent fires. The timing couldnt be better in Central Florida, where brush fires have been popping up all week.
Disney has partnered with the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Advertising Council to create public service announcements designed to raise awareness about wildfire prevention. The PSAs show characters and scenes from the movie Bambi with Smokey Bears longtime message: Only you can prevent wildfires. (In 2001, the term wildfires replaced forest fires.)
Many Americans believe lightning starts most wildfires, but about 90 percent are caused by people, according the Ad Council. The most common causes include unattended campfires, burning debris on windy days, arson, careless discarding of smoking materials or barbecue coals, and operating equipment without spark arrestors.
Bambi starred in the first wildfire prevention PSA in 1944, prior to Smokey Bears debut in the campaign later that year. For the current generation of school-age children who are likely to be less familiar with Smokey Bear the reunion with Bambi is smart move.
