New Caledonia —  Helicopters and their pilots have been helping fight bushfires in New Caledonia where the annual bushfire season has come early.

Firecrews spent three days earlier this week dousing a massive blaze near the airport on the Isle of Pines, just south of the mainland, that burned 1,700 hectares of ground. The airport was temporarily closed and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Officials say some of the fires were deliberately lit while others were the result of carelessness.
