Congo — Two villages on the Northern Nyunzu Sector, Muhuya at 15 km from Nyunzu downtown and Sumpa at 12 km, caught fire on August 12, 2010, burning houses with all of the inhabitants’ assets and equipments. Nyunzu is located in Tanganyika District, Katanga Province, DR Congo.
37 out of 41 households in Muhuya village were completely burned to the ground. 176 persons are affected with 69 children under five and 12 pregnant women.
In addition, food losses are estimated at 5.5 MT of corn, 0.5 MT of peanuts, and 1.5 MT of cassava. About 17 ha of on-farm crops were burnt.
Assets and household equipments got completely destroyed. These items include bicycles, agricultural tools, beds, clothes, kitchen utensils, chairs, among others.
For the moment, these two villages are simply overwhelmed and lack even the basic needs for their survival. They have no food, no house, no equipment and many of them spend the night outside lying on the ground in the cold.
ACTIONS TO DATE, AND EMERGENCY NEEDS:
At the time of compiling this request, no other ACT member has been able to respond to the needs of the suffering populations. DCA is working to raise awareness on the catastrophe. The estimated needs are: Non Food Items, Shelter, and Food.
