Ukrainian Officials Say Wildfires Under Control

Ukraine — Ukraine’s Emergency Situations Ministry said today that all of the wildfires in Kyiv Oblast have been extinguished and no fire danger exists in the Chornobyl region, RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service reports.
The ministry’s press service said firefighters had extinguished a peat fire near the village of Synyaky in Kyiv Oblast’s Vyshhorodsky district and that seven other large fires were put out in the oblast in the past day.
It told RFE/RL there are currently no fires in Kyiv Oblast, and that the situation in the forests near the Chornobyl nuclear disaster zone is under control.
Meanwhile, wildfires have been reported in other Ukrainian regions.
Emergency Situations Ministry officials in the northern Chernihiv Oblast told RFE/RL that local firefighters managed to localize a peat fire near the village of Kukshyn in the Nyzhyn district today, but have not yet extinguished it.
Officials said efforts to extinguish fires continue in four more villages in Chernihiv Oblast.
Extreme heat and carelessness led to wildfires in Ukraine earlier this month. Two small fires were reportedly extinguished in forests near the Chornobyl disaster zone last week.
