USA — A train derailment causes a grass fire in south Bismarck.

Emergency responders react to a train derailment south of Bismarck…. which in turn, causes a grass fire.

Calls of a Burlington Northern train going off the tracks near Creekside Drive came in from a resident around 4:00 this afternoon.

Trent Wangen with the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department says it is a coal train… and there are no hazardous materials on scene.

He says around 30 cars derailed… and there were no injuries… but a less than two acre grass fire was sparked near the tracks.

Wangen says Burleigh County Sheriff’s department, the Bismarck rural fire department, and metro ambulance all responded.

He said the grass fire is under control… and firefighters were mopping it up at this time.

Fire was contained by around 4:30… BN officials are on scene…

Wangen says there is extensive damage to the tracks… but all public roads are open… and says cleanup and repairs may take sevearl days.

Officials are only allowing local traffic on Creekside drive at this time.
