Philippines — A grassfire that crept into a shanty where pyrotechnic materials were kept, caused an explosion in Cabuyao town, Laguna before noon Thursday, police said.
Superintendent Dante Novicio, Cabuyao police chief, said by phone that the blast took place at around 11:30 a.m., causing a brief fire at a small-time firecracker manufacturing business owned by a certain Vincent Lebrilla.
He said the shanty, made of light materials, was located at an open, grassy field in Barangay Bigaa.
Around 25 kilos of firecracker powder were kept in the shanty.
About five people working inside the shanty were able to escape and were unhurt from the explosion.
The fire was put out 10 minutes after the blast and caused minor damages, such as broken jalousie windows to few nearby homes.
