USA — A man taken to the hospital with burns Saturday night is suspected of starting a brush fire behind a Shadowridge shopping complex, authorities said.

Just before 10 p.m., sheriff’s deputies were called to assist firefighters who were extinguishing a small vegetation fire behind the Big Lots at 760 Sycamore Drive, sheriff’s Lt. Anthony Ray said.

About five minutes later, a woman called 911 from a residence in the 200 block of Smilax Drive, about 11/2 miles away, because her husband had come home with burns, a fire dispatcher said. The man was taken to the burn unit at UCSD Medical Center, Ray said. He told deputies he had injured himself trying to put out a fire behind Big Lots, Ray said. His name was not released Sunday.

The fire is being investigated as an arson, Ray said.
