Finnland — A major blaze engulfed the Kekkilä peat processing plant in Eurajoki Tuesday morning. Firefighters battled the flames to prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings, including a fertilizer plant.
No one was reported injured in the fire, but the plant is expected to be a total loss.
There were about 20 emergency services units on site. Gas canisters in the area also posed a danger of explosions.
The fire was first reported just before 2 AM Tuesday. Efforts to put out the blaze continued into the afternoon. Firefighting was hampered by a lack of water at the site, with units carrying water from two kilometers away.
The cause of the fire remains unclear.
Kekkilä processes peat for use as a growth medium for plants and as fertilizer. The company’s CEO Petri Alava estimates damage from the fire at around 10 million euros.
