Cuba —    April has always been the month with the most forest fires, according to a report of the Forest Ranger force of the Ministry of the Interior. This organization announced that the most critical period in Cuba is February 1st to May 31st.

From January 1st to March 25th, there have been 129 fires, which have destroyed more than 1,719 hectares of forest. Most of these fires are the result of human negligence. Many people burn waste or other materials for different purposes without taking the necessary precautions; and many others set fires by simple throwing lit cigarettes around or with the sparks of their vehicles and equipment.

Forest Rangers are tightening up security measures for the month of April and are alerting the populating to be responsible in risk areas to avoid fires, as well as to notify the authorities as soon as a forest fire starts.
