Philippines —    The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here has sought measures to combat forest fires in the different municipalities in the province.

Levita Camat, Administrative Officer of DENR-Ifugao, stated that their office has started organizing the Fire Brigade Crew (FBC) to help in the protection of the environment specifically the forests and mountains.

The FBC was first organized in the municipality of Lamut since almost 80% of the mountains in said place were destroyed due to forest fire. This organization will be duplicated in the 11 municipalities of the province, Camat said.

Camat explained that the FBC will be composed of volunteers or concerned people within the community ready to help in the protection of the environment most especially the forests and mountains.

“The members of the fire brigade crew should come from the community and they should be willing to work for the protection of our forests and mountains even without compensation from the government since it is a voluntary work,” Camat explained.

She also disclosed that members of the FBC will be trained to enhance their skills and capabilities in preventing and combating forest fires.

DENR is also building additional fire lines in the different municipalities of the province to avert the widespread of forest fires.

Further more, forest rangers of the DENR were conducting monitoring activities to ensure that forest fires will be minimized in the province.
