India — A bushfire fanned by winds, which was reported to be spreading towards Japfü peak for the past few days, has been contained to a larger extent. However, with dry and windy season on, it was still uncertain if the blaze would ignite again or not, home guards senior staff officer T.T. Kikon said.
Thickness of dried leaves, which exceeded 12 inches in most of the forest area, made it difficult to control the fire, he said.
Home guards personnel were deputed to the area Mar 26 on receiving information from the DFO Kohima range Mar 25. Around 300 volunteers from Mima, Jakhama, Viswema, Phesama and Pfuchama villages also assisted in firefighting, he added.
