China —  China said Mar 21 that it had mobilized about 1,000 soldiers and civilians to try to put out a fire that began and raged that day’s noon in a forest area in Chayou (Tibetan: Zayul) County of Nyingchi (Tibetan: Nyingtri) Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

The official Xinhua news agency reported Mar 21 that the fire had spread over 26 hectares of forest, only 500 metres away from a school in the county.

No casualty was reported. The report said the fire was raging amid windy and dry weather.

Xinhua earlier reported Feb 26 that five of the seven Prefectural-level areas of TAR, namely, Lhasa, Shannan (Tibetan: Lhokha), Xigaze (Tibetan: Shigatse), Nyingchi (Tibetan: Nyingtri) and Chamdo had been under lingering drought since Oct ’09.
