Philippines — As the heat brought about by the El Nino phenomenon heightens, the Bureau of Fire Protection is intensifying its campaign on fire safety and fire prevention in time with the celebration of the Fire Prevention Month.
With the theme, “Sustaining Fire Prevention through Active Community Participation”, the BFP is conducting series of activities in line with the celebration.
City Fire Marshall ? Officer In-Charge Pamela Rojane Candido said during the recent City Peace and Order Council meeting that the activities include motorcade, massm quiz bee, poster making contest at the Gaisano City Mall; fire drill at the New Government Center, dialog with barangays on fire safety, fire Olympics at SM City Bacolod-North Wing, medical-dental mission and fun run.
As of January 2010, BFP-Bacolod revealed that it has received a total of 65 fire calls and 90 percent of which deals with grass fires. In the same period in 2009, BFP only received 29 fire calls.
Fire Inspector Jovelyn Zamar said the grass fires are brought about by the dry spell and intense heat due to El Nino.
BFP Bacolod has conducted a total of 46 fire drills in January while the bureau has inspected some 2,388 establishments for the first month of the year.
Candido added that the Bureau of Fire will intensify its conduct of fire safety inspection, fire safety information drive and fire drill on public and private establishments and other institution.
Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said that in this fire prevention month celebration, activities should be seriously participated, so we will be educated on the importance of fire safety tips to avoid loss of lives and properties.
The celebration of the Fire Prevention Month is by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A which aims to create public awareness on the importance of fire safety and prevention.
