USA — A blaze south of Rotary Park burned desert vegetation for nearly yhree hours and exhausted area resources Tuesday night, according to Lake Havasu City Division Chief Joe Davis. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department responded to the large fire at 7:42 p.m. with four engines, a battalion chief and a fireboat deployed to assist attacking the blaze from the water. The blaze was brought under control at 10:10 p.m.
We are very, very lucky there is no wind tonight, Davis said.
Davis said firefighter operations targeted the fire from all sides with hopes of the fire burning towards the lake and therefore burning itself out.
The Desert Hills Fire Department responded with a brush truck, fire truck and tanker truck to help Havasu firefighters.
Lake Havasu City Public Works also responded with a frontloader and broke down piles of debris on the north side of the fire in order to create a firebreak. That prevented the fire from spreading to nearby propane tanks, Davis said.
Fire officials said the area is not an area frequented by transients.
Forty minutes into the blaze, an engine was pulled from the brush fire to respond to a palm tree fire on Saddleback Drive. The tree fire posed no threat to nearby houses and was allowed to burn itself out.
A citywide recall of available off-duty firefighters followed and produced three additional engines to cover the rest of the city.
