A photograph of a person standing in the crowd at an Edgewater wildfire led to the arrest Friday of a 15-year-old who fire and police officials said confessed to starting numerous blazes in the southwestern corner of Edgewater’s Florida Shores subdivision.

Allan Dyer, Edgewater, is charged with intentional burning of land, a third-degree felony, after he admitted he lit three recent fires. Additional charges may be forthcoming, police Capt. Dave Arcieri said.

Edgewater Fire Marshal Jill Danigel said Dyer came to the attention of fire and police officials when he appeared in several photographs of the crowds attracted by fires last year, and again starting at the first of the year. Over the past several months the city has seen 14 brush fires.

“We have responded to an estimated seven (intentionally set) fires since January,” she said.

Many fires had numerous ignition points. One had as many as 19.

During her review of the photographs, the fire marshal said a number of firefighters recognized Dyer as being at their fire scenes. Arcieri said during interrogation Dyer told investigators he started three of the blazes.

The fires did not burn any structures or vehicles.
