India — After five days of salvage operations by hundreds of villagers, the forest fire in the idyllic Dzukou valley in Nagaland was finally brought under control but a vigil was on to prevent any spark from the smoking embers.
Village authorities and forest department officials confirmed that the engulfing blaze that ravaged nearly 15 sq km of the enchanting valley, home to many flora and fauna, was put out yesterday after over 500 villagers along with personnel from various government agencies fought to control the accidental forest fire.
The fire fighting operation was carried out by volunteers from both western and southern Angami areas.
The fire, which started in western Dzukou on Monday almost destroyed the Khonoma Tragopan sanctuary and the adjoining areas, swept towards southern Dzukou covered with prime forests.
