The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) hopes firefighters in the south-west can learn from four American firefighters who will be based in the area for the rest of the bushfire season.

Two of the expert firefighters will be based in Ballarat, and two will be stationed in Colac.

The DSE’s Hamish Webb says the firefighters are specialists in aviation, communications, fire behaviour and incident management.

He says they will each be taking on a full workload when they are deployed next week.

“We’re embedding them into our regional structures, so they’ll become part of the team and be able to work very closely with the firefighters on the ground, and in the incident management teams,” Mr Webb said.

“To pass on their information, knowledge and expertise, but from their point of view as well, to learn and develop.”
