Australia — Victoria’s volunteer firefighters are calling for the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to be in charge of all firefighting in Victoria.

Currently, the Department of Sustainability and Environment is the lead agency for fires on public land.

The Bushfires Royal Commission has found there was confusion about which agency was in charge of different fires burning around the state on Black Saturday.

The president of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria, Gary Lyttle, says the CFA has the experience and resources to take charge of all fires.

“We’ve believed for a long time that CFA should be the lead agency,” he said.

“It has the experience. With 60,000 volunteers supported by 1,300 paid career staff, it would be able to become the lead agency for bushfires.”
