Give locals a say in fire areas – Rudd

Australia — The federal government has agreed that locals in Victoria’s bushfire-hit areas need to be involved more in plans to rebuild their communities.

Federal MP Fran Bailey, whose seat of McEwan was ravaged by the February fires, has told parliament the Council of Australian Governments could oversee the plans.

The prime minister Kevin Rudd agrees greater flexibility is needed but also says reconstruction’s difficult because many local home owners don’t actually live there, but in Melbourne.
