Crews at L.A. wildfire brace for Santa Ana winds

USA — Crews expect to contain the largest wildfire in modern Los Angeles County history on Tuesday but they’re keeping an eye on weather forecasts that call for Santa Ana winds.

The fire in the Angeles National Forest is 93% contained.

Over the weekend, helicopters began dropping water within the boundaries of the blaze northeast of Los Angeles. Crews want to step up dousing of hot spots in the nearly 281-square-mile fire.

Winds of 20 to 30 mph are forecast in the mountains Monday evening with gusts to 45 mph, which could fan embers to life.

The arson-caused fire that began Aug. 26 burned 89 homes and caused the death of two firefighters whose truck went off a mountain road.
