East County Brush Fire Started by Resident Burning Without a Permit

Two firefighters suffered heat-related injuries Saturday while battling a 14-acre brush fire that was started by a resident who was burning debris without a permit, a Cal Fire official said.

One of the injured firefighters was taken to a hospital, said Cal Firespokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik.

The fire was reported at 11:30 a.m. near Campo and Millar Ranch roads, off state Route 94, she said.

Around noon, California Highway Patrol officials shut down state Route 94 was shut down between Singer Lane and Steele Canyon Road.

The road was reopened around 2 p.m. and the fire was contained to 14 acres, according to the California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire.
