Zimbabwe — A goromonzi man was burnt to death while trying to put off veld fires.

England Kawamba aged 53, of Gwaze village in Chief Chikwaka died while trying to put off the fire which was advancing towards his house.

Mashonaland Chief Provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Godfrey Mubaiwa said Kawamba’s clothes caught fire as he battled to put off the inferno in the company of his wife and another woman from the same village.

The two women tried to rescue him from the fire but failed, resulting in Kawamba’s death.

A report was made at Goromonzi police and Kawamba’s body was taken to Parirenyatwa hospital for a postmortem.

Investigations to establish the cause of the fire are in progress.

Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector Mubaiwa has appealed to members of the public to have fireguards near their homesteads.

He warned those who start veld fires that they risk being prosecuted if caught.
