Australia — The leader of a national farmer advocacy group has criticised the Victorian Premier for blaming climate change for the Black Saturday bushfires, that killed 173 people.

Robert Belcher, managing director of Sustainable Agriculture Communities Australia, says the arid continent is drought and fire-prone.

He says Premier John Brumby must take responsibility for bushfire management.

“Whether there is climate change or not, we are always going to have serious fire problems,” Mr Belcher says.

“I find it difficult to tolerate Premiers excusing themselves using the phrase ‘climate change’.

“To excuse yourself, using that issue, is pretty indefensible.”
