Uganda — Two farms, one belonging to former East African Community secretary general Col. Amanya Mushega, were destroyed over the weekend in Mbarara and Kiruhura districts.

The other farm belonged to Karekona of Rubare, Kashari in Mbarara district. The fire destroyed crops and pasture but the cattle survived after residents put out the fire using tree branches.

The south-western regional Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye, said they advised residents to create barriers to stop the fire from spreading to other parts.

“It is unfortunate that people are burning bushes but no arrests have been made because people do not want to report fellow villagers yet a lot of property has been damaged,” Namaye added

He said last week there were several fire outbreaks in the region, citing the one on Mountain Muhabura in Kisoro. The fire that threatened the wildlife on the mountain, ranges, is said to have been started by a bee-keeper in Rwanda.

She said the Police have intensified community policing to stop people from burning bushes.
