USA —

An electrical short in an abandoned home caused a fire that has burned 48,000 acres north of Chester inMajor County since Friday.

The state fire marshal office determined the fire began in a home north of Chester on Friday afternoon, saidMatt Lehenbauer, Woodward County Emergency Manager.

Some of the 150 firefighters on the scene have been treated for minor heat exhaustion. On Sunday, one fireman was treated for a mild burn. Crews are expected to work throughout the night to get the fire under control, but the weather has made it difficult.

“As long as this heat continues with the low humidity and the winds, it’s going to be difficult to get this fire under control,” Lehenbauer said. “There’s just a lot of fuel here, a lot of things to burn.”

Lehenbauer said he has heard reports of some buildings burning, but couldn’t confirm what type of structures or whether they were occupied. Because the fire is moving through a rural area, no one has been evacuated.
