Finland — Efforts continued on Friday evening to bring a forest fire under control at Ilomantsi, close to the eastern border.
Around 40 firefighters were battling flames in a tract of forest 500 x 400 metres to prevent its spread. Efforts were hampered by the lack of roads in the area, which is close to the Russian border.
A Frontier Guard helicopter discovered the fire Friday afternoon. No cause for the blaze was immediately evident.
On Saturday afternoon firefighters reported that the fire was under control. However monitoring of the area was to continue overnight with help from the Finnish Defense Forces.
