Malaysia — Haze hit parts of the island in the morning but a downpour in the afternoon helped clear the situation slightly.

Large ships at the North Butterworth Container Terminal which were usually visible from Persiaran Gurney were seen instead shrouded in a thick fog this morning.

The Meteorological Services Department said Penang experienced moderate haze which restricted visibility to between five and eight kilometres in various places on the island and mainland.

A spokesman said visibility at Bayan Lepas was eight kilometres while in Butterworth it was five kilometres. Visibility of more than 10 kilometre is considered good.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environment said the air pollution index in the state registered readings of between 35 and 56 at 11am. This is considered to be between moderate and good.

The API reading in Universiti Sains Malaysia was 35, Prai (46) and Seberang Jaya (56). The readings in all three places show the presence of tiny dust particles in the air.
