Australia — Two South Australian cops sent to Victoria to help during the bushfires have been charged with sexual assault.

Damien Michael Jay Wilmott, 29, from Banksia Park, has been charged with one count of rape and Steven James Westcott, 39, from Daw Park, has been charged with one count of indecent assault.
The police officers, who have been suspended, appeared at Adelaide Magistrates Court today and were bailed to re-appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 13 after an extradition application was filed.

Both men were bailed on a $500 surety and were barred from having contact with a list of 50 people, which included fellow police officers.

Police believe the alleged attacks happened when the officers were in Victoria helping during the aftermath of theBlack Saturday bushfires, which claimed the lives of 173 people.

The charges follow an Ethical Standards Department (ESD) investigation.
