USA — Forty-year-old Shawn Gose and his partner, Cecil “Chip” Chisholm, got caught in the path of an out-of-control grass fire Southeast of Winfield.
The two were working for a landowner who was burning off prairie grass when the blaze spread to 1,000 acres. With the fire burning toward them, the men’s truck got stuck in barbed wire. Chisholm was able to get out and run, but Gose was stuck inside as the fire devoured the truck.
“I never thought anything like this would ever happen,” Deborah Gose says. “(My son) was such a strong man. Every time he got hurt he was always able to shake it off and keep going.”
Doctors told Mrs. Gose her son suffered burns to 90 percent of his body. Upon arriving at the hospital, family members knew the outlook was grim.
“I just know he’s not in pain now,” She says.
Gose lived long enough for his family members to arrive at the hospital to say goodbye.
Chisholm continues to recover from burns to his hands and arms at the Via Christi burn unit.
