Sweden — A forest fire burning out of control in western Sweden has destroyed at least 4 square miles of land, firefighters said Sunday.

The fire north of Gothenburg spread thick smoke over the region, forcing the evacuation of 33 people from 15 homes, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

In the municipality of Ale, in Nodinge-Nol, residents were urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed, said Karin Dickens, a spokeswoman for Ale’s council.

“One can detect the smell of the fire,” Dickens said. “We have closed the ventilation system in the council buildings to keep out the smoke.”
