Cuba — A forest fire in the eastern province of Camaguey has affected 7,000 hectares (17,287 acres) in one of Cuba’s main coniferous reserves, state media reported.

The fire, which is “of large size,” started Thursday afternoon and several firefighting units are trying to contain it, the official AIN news agency reported.

The blaze has “a 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) front” in one of the island’s largest pine and eucalyptus reserves, Camaguey’s Provincial Defense Council said.

“Environmental conditions are favorable for the fire to advance, since there is much dry material in the plantations, low humidity due to the dry season and relatively strong winds,” AIN said.
